- je e-mailadres (om in te loggen);
- de naam en het uiterlijk van je avatar (kleuren, kapsel, bril). De foto van je gezicht blijft altijd op je toestel;
- je voortgang: quests, logboek, gelopen afstand, level, munten, rugzak, ansichtkaarten en de plaatsen en landen waar je in het spel was;
- je laatste plek in het spel (coördinaten, plaats, land en straat), zodat je op een ander apparaat verder kunt;
- je vrienden en de post die je met hen uitwisselt;
- je uitnodigingscode, en wie jou heeft uitgenodigd of wie jij hebt uitgenodigd (voor de beloning in munten);
- Supabase: database en inloggen (servers in West-Europa);
- Brevo: verstuurt de mail met je inlogcode;
Wandering Around is a hobby project by Mike Hurenkamp (the Netherlands), who is responsible for your data in this game. Below is what is stored, why, and how to remove it.
Without an account
If you play without an account, everything stays on your own device: your place in the game, your progress, your avatar and the photo you used for it. Nothing is sent to our server, except feedback you send yourself.
With an account
You sign in with your email address and a code sent by email. On the server we then store:
- your email address (to sign in);
- your avatar's name and look (colours, hairstyle, glasses). The photo of your face always stays on your device;
- your progress: quests, log, distance walked, level, coins, backpack, postcards and the places and countries you visited in the game;
- your last place in the game (coordinates, town, country and street), so you can continue on another device;
- your friends and the mail you exchange with them;
- your invite code, and who invited you or whom you invited (for the coin reward);
- against cheating: per device your last place in the game, your journeys in the game, the distance walked per day, and notes when something does not add up (for example too fast). We keep journeys and notes for at most 90 days.
We only use this to make the game work. No ads, no tracking, nothing is sold.
Playing together
When you are signed in, other players who are playing at the same time see your name, look, level and place in the game. Your friends see which town and country you are playing in, and the street only when they are in the same town. Nobody sees your email address.
Your location at the first start
The first time you play, the game asks for your location once, to start near you. If you decline, you start roughly in your town. After that you only walk in the game; your real location is no longer used.
Feedback
If you send feedback, we store your message with the game version, language, your place in the game and the type of device (such as "Android 14 · Chrome"). If you are signed in, it is linked to your account; otherwise only to the email address you enter yourself (if you do). We delete feedback once it has been handled, after one year at the latest.
Who helps us
- Supabase: database and sign-in (servers in Western Europe);
- Brevo: sends the email with your sign-in code;
- Cloudflare: hosts the game and stores shared map tiles. When you request a sign-in code, Cloudflare Turnstile first checks that you are not a robot (only at that moment).
To draw the world, your device also requests data directly from public services: the OpenStreetMap map servers (Overpass), Open-Meteo (weather), Wikidata and Wikimedia (photos and information about monuments), flagcdn (flags), and cdnjs, jsDelivr and Google Fonts (code and fonts). These services see your IP address and which part of the map is requested, as with any website. We do not see any of this.
On your device
The game keeps your game and the map in your browser's storage (localStorage and IndexedDB), so it also opens without a connection. These are not tracking cookies. If you clear the site data in your browser, everything that is not in your account is gone.
How long
Your account data is kept until you delete your account. You can do that yourself in the game under Log → Account → Delete account. This immediately removes your email address, avatar, progress, place, friends, mail and your feedback from the server.
Your rights
You may ask which data we hold about you, and have it corrected or deleted. Send a message via Feedback in the game (Log → Account). If you disagree with how we handle your data, you can file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or the authority in your own country.
